Leprechauns

www.flickr.com
Leprechauns have a ancient lineage, far removed from their current image as wish-bestowing fairies.

The first recorded mention of Leprechauns is in a 8th century story called 'The Death of Fergus Mac Leiti' in which the original Luchorphans are water spirits. They seize upon Fergus while he is sleeping on the seashore, and eventually when he traps several of them, he is granted waterproof powers and the ability to swim underwater.

Since this time, a confusion arose between Lurchorpans and the Cluricaune, who are cunning spirits who haunt cellars, drink, smoke, and play tricks on people.

Over time Leprechauns have come to be portrayed as male and solitary. One tradition has them as cobblers who if found by humans can be made to show the way to crocks of gold.

It has been suggested that their original name derives from the Irish god, Lugh, known as one of the three golden shoemakers.
