www.flickr.com
Pumpkins are a fruit grown on every continent except Antarctica. They are part of the squash family and there are many different varieties ~ and come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Pumpkins are 90 percent water.

The Connecticut field variety is the traditional American pumpkin.

The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon, the word "pepon" was changed by the French into "pompon", the English changed "pompon" to "pumpion", and Americans changed the the 'pumpion' to pumpkin! Native Americans called pumpkins "isqoutm squash."

The self proclaimed pumpkin capital of the world is Morton, Illinois.
